Fitch Smith business papers, 1814-1870, 1929.

Fitch Smith was an entrepreneur in the town of Derby, Connecticut, where he sat on several boards of directors, held stock in the Naugatuck Transportation Company, owned a share of the Birmingham Water Works, and had controlling interest in several steam ships that plied the Naugatuck River and one of which was used to transport troops during the Civil War. The collection consists primarily business correspondence, 1848-1870, with the bulk dating from 1862. He received reports from Captain L.H. Layfield, John Hubbell(purser) and William .L Lockyer (steward) of the Steamer John Brooks, as well as letters from Captain John Brooks and Captain Charles Dutcher, which related to the travels of the Steamer and its work transporting wounded troops to Washington and Philadelphia. Other documents include bills of lading for a number of vessels, 1852, financial records of the Schooner Louisa of New York and of the Ansonia of Derby, minutes and financial records of the Naugatuck Transportation Co., accounts of the Birmingham Water Works, deeds in the names of Tomlinson, Hawkins and Smith, checks and promissory notes, papers related to the estate of the John M. Bouton, papers of Isabelle M. Smith, and assorted financial and printed materials.
