A. Alejo Bachelot of Mission San Gabriel and dated July 11, 1836; a document, signed by Abel Stearns and dated June 2, 1843, regarding commerce with Mission San Fernando; a J. D. Thomson letter to Abel Stearns, dated Aug. 11, 1847, regarding a contract between Eulogio Celis and John C. Fremont for 600 head of cattle; an Abel Stearns letter to H. D. Bacon, dated Dec. 21, 1864, regarding a loan; and a certificate of sale, dated Dec. 6, 1865, in the matter of E. W. Morse vs. Abel Stearns in the First District Court of Los Angeles County.

Ephraim W. Morse, a businessman and county official, was born in Amersbury, Massachusetts on October 16, 1823. He arrived in San Francisco on July 5, 1849 and mined for a short time before moving to San Diego, where he engaged in general merchandising. In 1869 Morse moved from Old San Diego to New Town.
