Masonic membership record book from Suffolk County, Va., reused by Union commissary sergeant [manuscript], 1838-1853, 1864-1865.

The volume contains membership financial records for Astread Lodge no. 85, Suffolk, Va., chiefly initiation fees, passing (degree raising) fees and dues. Brief notes indicate ministers admitted without charge and the death, withdrawal, or removal of members. Notes and accounts were entered by David G. Potts, Lodge treasurer. The volume contains scattered entries by Charles P. Bailey, a commissary Sergeant with the 1st Massachestts Heavy Artillery noting the issuance of subsistence stores and receipt of foodstuffs from the Sanitary Commission, together with miscellaneous notes including "captured at Sussex C. H. Virga. Dec. 11th 1864," a mock prayer to President Lincoln: "Our father who art in Washington, Uncle Abraham, give us this day our dailey ration of salt horse and hard tack," and a rhyme or toast "Here's health to the sick, Honor to the brave, Comfort to the wounded, And Freedom to the Slave."
