Series 55, 80, and 81 of RG 62-16 consist of correspondence documenting the St. Clair flats. Series 55 consists of letters in and corbons of letters out (1940-41) relating to releases of right of way, highways, property leases, taxes, estate settlements, and all land business. Includes maps. Occasionally includes earlier letters referred to in the 1940-41 letters. Alphabetically arranged by correspondent. Series 80 conists of letters received by the State Board of Control of St. Clair Flats (1913-14). The Board was created by Michigan Public Act 215 of 1909. These letters document the certificate of determination, leases and claims. These are arranged by name of correspondent. A-W (November, 1913-May 1914), A-W (June-December, 1914) and O-Z (1931). Series 81 consists of correspondence relating to taxes paid on lots in St. Clair Flats (1932-33). Includes letters in and carbons of letters out from the Michigan Lands Division, Department of Conservation. Includes report of taxes on certain lots and receipts for payments of taxes. Arranged by correspondent, A-L.

The 1925 Clark-McNary Act expanded the provisions of 1911 Federal legislation creating the National Forest System (Weeks Law). It made it easier for the United States Department of Agriculture to buy land from those sellers whose property was located within the National Forest System.
