Lecture notes on Lucretius, Tibullus and Propertius, ca. 1837-1852.

Ernst von Leutsch's handwritten notes, evidently for lectures he gave mainly on the Roman poets Lucretius, Tibullus and Propertius, at the University of Göttingen. Also included is a section of notes that are a commentary on Virgil's Georgics, Book 4, with running references to verses 315 to 514. The notes (perhaps 250 leaves) were apparently compiled over a period of time; they comprise individual gatherings, some containing numerous loose notes inserted. The original or intended order is uncertain. Among the few bibliographic references containing dates; the latest found was 1837; several loose notes are written on scraps of correspondence dated in 1852. Of the portions of the manuscript of a general or introductory nature, one section of notes is paginated 1 to 73, with headings referring to the history of Rome up until the death of Gaius Gracchus (p. 1) and to the inner condition of Rome from the death of Gaius Gracchus until the murder of Julius Caesar (p. 63); it includes at the end two unpaginated leaves containing references to Catullus. Two smaller sections of notes have the headings Characteristics of the Augustan age, and Short history of the Roman elegy at the time of Augustus (the latter possibly relates specifically to the notes on Propertius). The remaining sections comprise commentaries on specific works by the above named poets. The notes on Lucretius form a coherent set of gatherings of similar appearance, with running references to verses 1035 to 1184 in Book 4. A similarly coherent section on Tibullus, which looks like it was written around the same time as the notes on Lucretius, focuses on poems 1 and 3, evidently in Book 1. Other notes of a less homogeneous appearance, apparently also on Tibullus (some labeled as such), address other poems in Book 1 (poems 2, 4-10). The notes on Propertius are labeled with references to Books 1 and 2.
