University of South Carolina collection of diplomas and literary society certificates, 1821-1943.

Collection of diplomas issued to male and female students by South Carolina College and University of South Carolina, along with certificates awarded to members of literary societies (the Clariosophic Society; the Euphradian Society; and the Hypatian Society, founded, 1915, for women students), along with several certificates from individual departments representing many disciplines (Chemistry; Education; Engineering; French; Natural Philosophy; Physical Education; School of Rhetoric, Criticism, and Elocution; etc.) Persons represented include Robert Means Davis; Basil Manly; William Munro Shand; William Henry Verner; and others, including John Alfred Edwards, whose 1876 certificate from the Preparatory Department was issued by the "Radical University" during Reconstruction. Other organizational certificates include one issued to Shirley Elizabeth Brown (cum laude graduate, Class of 1943), documenting her membership in Alpha Delta Pi Sorority.
