Born in Emporia, Virginia, Ferdinand Eugene Daniel (1839-1914) was the son of R. W. T. Daniel and Hester Jordan Adams. After moving with his family to Vicksburg and then to Jackson, Mississippi, he studied both law and medicine. In 1861, Daniel enlisted in Company K of the 18th Mississippi Infantry of the Confederate Army, though he left a short time later to complete his medical degree.
