Composed of two typescript volumes, the Clay County Narrative, 1930-1945, chronicles the history of Clay County, Texas, and its early settlers as told to students at Henrietta High School. The narrative describes the history and geography of Clay County and its county seat, Henrietta, and contains reminiscences of such early settlers as William S. Ikard, Fannie Deaton, and George S. Myres.

Born in Somerville, Mississippi, William Susan Ikard (1847-1934), was one of five sons of Milton Ikard and Isabella Tubb. Ikard lived with his family in Louisiana for a short time before relocating to Texas in 1852. Nicknaming himself Sude, Ikard learned to farm and ranch and fought with local Native Americans in several conflicts.
