Born in Canandaigua, Ontario County, N.Y., 17 May 1820; came to Detroit with his family in 1827. Lived in Detroit for most of his life; worked in the book business. He spent about 5 years in Buffalo during the 1840s, where he worked for W.B. & C.E. Peck Booksellers and Stationers, agents for Pomeroy & Co., forerunner of American Express.
