Relating the details of his move to Oxford to begin his new teaching position; saying "Everything is changed there as much as I am changed myself, --but I shall find a ghostly identity in the University and in my own person as if my life time was renewing its old continuity, and as if the 45 years which have come and gone since I left it were a dream[.]"

Distinguished historian James Anthony Froude was born at Dartington rectory, Devon, in 1818. He was the brother of William Froude (1810-1879), engineer and naval architect, and of Richard Hurrell Froude (1803-1836), divine. The younger Froude was educated at Westminster School from 1830, and then privately in the village of Merton.
