Wyman family of Athens papers, 1876-1986 bulk: 1901-1955.

This collection is divided into four series reflecting different aspects of the history of Athens, Vermont, and the life and career of Ned Wyman. The first series contains records related to the town of Athens accumulated by the Wyman family. In addition to miscellaneous newspaper clippings and a highway map from 1986 are records of the Methodist Church, including finance committee records from 1961-1971 and a ledger recording information about church memberships, marriages, and baptisms from 1898 into the 1970s. There are also records of the Central Windham Chapter, American Red Cross kept by Lora Wyman when she was secretary and treasurer for this chapter between 1929 and 1948. Also included in this series are notebooks kept by the treasurer and secretary of the local 20th Century Club, ca. 1901-1908. The second series consists of materials documenting Ned Wyman's high school education. His time at the Leland and Gray Seminary is reflected in his school notebooks on a wide range of topics, including rhetoric, science, recitation, banking, English, botany and education. Photographs of the school building, pupils, and teachers also date from Wyman's attendance at Leland and Gray Seminary. The third series is composed of farms records dating between 1915-1955. Account books date primarily from 1925-1939 and 1949-1955, although 1927-1929 are not represented. Expenses, inventories and other financial information in these account books provide a snapshot of Ned Wyman's farming and flock breeding activities. Photographs of the Wyman family and Athens, Vermont comprise the final series of this collection. Photocopies of two disassembled photograph albums include images of buildings, people, school and farming activities in Athens in the early 20th century. Residences as well as church and school buildings are captured in these photographs and many locations and people are also identified. Photographs from these albums have been removed to the VHS general photograph and postcard files.
