James Chesnut, Jr., at his final home called Sarsfield (constructed ca. 1872), located in Camden, S.C.; entries record: title, author, publisher, date of publication, binding type; condition and number of volumes; note on endpapers: "list may have been made as part of the inventory of his estate [following his death in 1885]. The dates of the volumes listed range from 1714 to 1899, most of them before 1870." Entries recorded in a blank membership log book printed for the Order of the Golden Chain, a mutual-assistance fraternal organization founded 1881 and pronounced bankrupt in 1899 [not to be confused with the organization founded in 1929 as a fraternal social organization for Freemasons and their immediate female relatives].
