The collection consists of the papers of Professor William J. Cunningham, an authority on railroad operations and transportation, The collection includes material on railway magnate James J. Hill concerning establishment of a professorship in railway studies at Harvard; material on the Great Northern Railroad; Cunningham's journal kept during a 1916 railroad trip; correspondence regarding Chinese railroads and the purchase of railroad management books; correspondence concerning a summer school course on transportation; and other material on courses at the Graduate School of Business Administration. The collection also contains case files kept with George P. Baker consisting of correspondence with railroad and airline executives, notes and drafts of cases, typescripts of cases, and blueprints and maps of railroad systems.

George P. Baker joined the faculty of the Harvard Business School in 1936 as an Assistant Professor of Transportation. During World War II he resigned to work for the government. William James Cunningham worked in the railroad industry from 1895-1908. In 1908 he joined the Harvard University Graduate School of Business Administration as a Lecturer on Railroad Operation. In 1910 he became an Assistant Professor, a position he held until 1915, when he was made the James J. Hill Professor of Transportation.
