Claude Bragdon sketches circa 1890-1910

Claude Bragdon sketches consists of 2 pieces: "Front Entrance to the Bevier Building," pen and ink; "Design for the New Municipal Building for New York City, New York," pen and ink. Please note: Design for the New Municipal Building sketch is heavily damaged: losses, tears, flaking, and brittleness. There is also some question as to its authenticity and attribution to Bragdon. Two sketches by Rochester architect Claude Bragdon. Bragdon taught at Rochester Athenaeum and Mechanics Institute, a precursor to Rochester Institute of Technology, from 1894-1897.

Claude Fayette Bragdon, architect, stage designer, author, and poet, was born in Oberlin, Ohio, on August 1, 1866. In 1891 he moved to Rochester, N.Y., and in 1923 he settled in New York City until his death in 1946. His architectural designs include Rochester's New York Central Railroad Station and the Rochester First Universalist Church. It is unclear when the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) first admitted minority students. However, it appears as though the first African American students entered the Rochester Athenaeum and Mechanics Institute (renamed RIT in 1944) during the early 1900s. For instance, in 1906 Fredericka Sprague, the granddaughter of Frederick Douglass, took classes at the Institute.
