Correspondence (7 letters, handwritten and typescript) between authors of science fiction, fantasy, and horror concerning their writing and published efforts. One letter (3 p., May 10, 1934) co-authored by Barlow and H.P. Lovecraft. Typescript by Barlow with manuscript annotations and a lengthy manuscript addendum from Lovecraft signed "Ech-Pi-El" [i.e. H.P.L.]. Typescript portion by Barlow ends with "Yours by the tentacles of Cthulhu" with a colored pencil drawing of the Lovecraft character in place of the signature. Also includes the original mailing envelope and two newpaper clippings referenced in the letter about a dog coming back to life, and sea captains deploring scientific skepticism about sea monsters. Two letters (7 p.) dated June 29-30, 1934 and circa 1934, discussing art, art school, books, drawings etc. Includes an 8 inch by 8 inch pencil sketch of Lovecraft's Cthulhu monster, signed with Barlow's intials, EB [i.e. "Ech Bie" i.e. H.B.] on verso of 1934 Buick car advertisement. Four handwritten letters (10 p.) written between January and August of 1943. The earliest letter (1 p., Jan. 29, 1943) was sent to Barlow by Baldwin inquiring about a story by Gustav Meyrink entitled "Golem." Barlow replies on the verso (1 p., Mar. 12, 1943 [misdated by Barlow as 1942]) and includes a handwritten copy of Meyrink's short story, "The Devil's Grindstone." Two more letters containing remarks about Barlow's past difficulties as executor of the Lovecraft estate, his current work in Mexico, and his desire to keep his library intact.

Clark Ashton Smith was an author of poetry and later of fantastic fiction in pulp magazines. He began correspondence with another author Samuel Loveman in 1913 that would last until 1941.
