Original preparatory drawing for an engraving by Jean Godefroy, one of 5 engravings known to exist after a series of 6 drawings by Prud'hon to illustrate: Bonaparte, Lucien, prince de Canino. La tribu indienne, ou, Édouard et Stellina / par le citoyen L.B. A Paris : De l'imprimerie de Honnert, an VII [1799]. The prints are not known to have been issued with the book and were perhaps created for an unrealized deluxe edition. The other 4 prints are by Barthélémy Roger. Cf. Cohen-De Ricci, col. 173-174; Goncourt, E. de. Cat. raisonné de l'œuvre peint, dessiné et gravé de P.P. Prud'hon, 137-141. This drawing is for Goncourt 138, illustrating an incident in chapter 2, "Le sacrifice." It depicts 3 men in Western dress (English prisoners) kneeling before a woman in a tunic (Stellina), while a man in a loincloth (Riamir) raises a club to threaten a man in a robe (the itobar); a background figure wears a feather headdress. Captioned in black ink "Le sacrifice." Inscribed in ink beneath drawing: "Fût-ce le grand Brama, dit-il, ces trois hommes m'appartient, et je les donne à Stellina" (cf. Le tribu indienne, v. 1, p. 75). Indented for transfer and blackened on verso. Inscribed in blue crayon on verso: "(Lucien Bonaparte) Proudhon [sic]." Size of image (in a drawn frame): 12 x 7.8 cm. In a modern mat (23 x 18 cm.).
