Charles M. Swift was born in Middlebury, Vt., the son of George Sedgwick and Louise (May) Swift and grandson of Samuel Swift (author of the History of Middlebury). He graduated from Detroit High School in 1870 and was admitted to the bar in 1877. He practiced law in Detroit until ca. 1893 and was later in business connected with building and operating electric transportation lines in Michigan and Manila in the Philippines.
