The RIT Evening Student Association records consist of correspondence, fliers, course schedules, newsletters, and miscellaneous materials. The correspondence includes information on the group's founding, as well as other administrative issues. The collection also includes fliers for various events and Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) course schedules. There are also three newsletters from the organization with general information for evening students and three miscellaneous items. These items include a pocket calendar; a "Guidebook for Evening Student Governments" from the International Association of Evening Student Councils; a folder containing a copy of the group's newspaper, The Image; and a "Purchase Power" wallet ID card application. It is unclear when the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) first admitted minority students. However, it appears as though the first African American students entered the Rochester Athenaeum and Mechanics Institute (renamed RIT in 1944) during the early 1900s. For instance, in 1906 Fredericka Sprague, the granddaughter of Frederick Douglass, took classes at the Institute. The Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) Evening Student Association (ESA) was formed in 1964 as the Evening College Student Association.
