Founding of the Rochester Athenaeum and Mechanics Institute Radio Program scripts 1939 January

Radio scripts from two episodes of a radio series on the history of the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT), formerly the Rochester Athenaeum and Mechanics Institute (RAMI). The program aired over several weeks in early 1939 on WHEC in Rochester, NY. The Founding of the Rochester Athenaeum and Mechanics Institute Radio Program scripts consist of two different scripts from the radio series. The program was designed to inform individuals in the Rochester area, specifically students at the university, of the history of the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT), known as the Rochester Athenaeum and Mechanics Institute at that time. The two scripts in the collection are from the first two programs. The first script covers the history of the Rochester Athenaeum (founded 1829), RIT's earliest predecessor. The second script conveys the history of the Mechanics Institute (founded 1885), another predecessor of the university. There are multiple copies of each script in the collection.

For instance, in 1906 Fredericka Sprague, the granddaughter of Frederick Douglass, took classes at the Institute. There are several other instances of African American students attending the school during the early 20th century as well...

The Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) can trace its origins to the founding of the Rochester Athenaeum in 1829. After joining with several different Rochester institutions during the 19th century, the Athenaeum finally merged with the Mechanics Institute (founded in 1885) in 1891 to form the Rochester Athenaeum and Mechanics Institute (RAMI). RAMI changed its name to the Rochester Institute of Technology in 1944 to better reflect the university's role in the field of technical education. I...
