Consists of one autographed letter signed by James A. Garfield to "My Dear Governor" (David Tod) while campaigning, dated 13 September 1864 from Mad River & Lake Erie R.R. Garfield suggests in the letter that the Central Committee make some arrangement by which travelling expenses of speakers shall be paid and states that he is being forced to give up campaigning for a while. In pencil.

James Garfield, twentieth President of the United States, was born in Cuyahoga County, Ohio, in 1831. After embarking on an academic career, he joined the Ohio volunteer infantry regiment, and in 1863 was appointed Major General in the same regiment. He served as a member of the U. S. House of Representatives from 1863 to 1880, when he was elected President.
