Civil War veteran cabinet card [picture], 1910.

Cabinet card of George H. Otis, a resident of Mineral Point, Wisconsin who served as a major in Company I, 2nd Wisconsin Infantry Regiment during the Civil War. The image depicts Otis on his 76th birthday wearing a GAR pin. Originally from New York, Otis moved to Wisconsin and was educated in Racine and Mineral Point. By 1852 he was working in the newspaper printing industry and was a typesetter when he enlisted in 1861. Otis was eventually promoted to captain of Company I, and assumed command of the entire regiment after his superior officers were killed or wounded during the Battle of Gettysburg. Otis mustered out when his term expired, but accepted a commission as major of the 8th Regiment, United States Veteran Volunteers. He served at fortifications in New York and Washington D. C. until the war ended and was promoted to brevet lieutenant colonel. After the war, he returned to Mineral Point and was elected as the clerk of Iowa County. After his first wife's death in 1871, Otis returned to the newspaper trade and worked for a number of local papers in Iowa. He married again, moved to McGregor, Iowa, and was made editor of the "North Iowa Times" in 1880. He worked to record the stories of the 2nd Wisconsin Infantry and authored "The Second Wisconsin Infantry" in 1883. Otis eventually moved to Fort Collins, Colorado with his family and died there in 1930. The photograph was taken by the Haefer Studio in Monona, Iowa in 1910.
