George Reynolds Freedley, author, librarian, lecturer, educator, and theatre critic was born September 5, 1904 in Richmond, Virginia. He was the son of George Jacobs Freedley and Maude A. Reynolds. Freedley graduated from the University of Richmond in 1925. He studied at Yale University, where he was a student of George Pierce Baker from 1926 to 1928, and received his Master for Fine Arts in drama in 1936.
