James J. Granato collection 1919-1980 1919 - 1920

Diploma and photographs of James J. Granato, a graduate of the Rochester Athenaeum in 1919. The collection also includes a brief biographical sketch, written by Granato's son, James M. Granato and a copy of the RIT Reporter from 1952. The James J. Granato collection contains biographical information on Granato, as well as several photographs and a diploma. The biographical sketch in the collection was written by his son, James M. Granato, in response to an article in the February 8, 1952 RIT Reporter that listed Granato as a "Lost Alumni." This RIT Reporter article is also in the collection, along with two photographs of Granato and his official Rochester Athenaeum and Mechanics Institute diploma.

It is unclear when the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) first admitted minority students. However, it appears as though the first African American students entered the Rochester Athenaeum and Mechanics Institute (renamed RIT in 1944) during the early 1900s. For instance, in 1906 Fredericka Sprague, the granddaughter of Frederick Douglass, took classes at the Institute.
