Roswell Sabine Ripley papers, 1861-1863.

Six letters, 5 Feb.-2 Mar. 1861 (Fort Moultrie, S.C.), including letters to Captain George James, advising him to send no additional recruits pending preparation of adequate quarters; reporting on the condition of batteries on Sullivan's Island, S.C., specifying ammunition requirements; reviewing work of the engineers, stating, "I consider it due to the officers and soldiers who commence the cannonade that they should not be expected to achieve the task placed before them with such inadequate means as have been provided for the real work in hand"; and rejecting the view that Fort Sumter, S.C., could be forced to surrender within forty-eight hours and expressing his opinion that preparations should be made "for a continued cannonade and bombardment... if we hope to succeed in it." Confederate Army General Orders Number 36, dated 13 Aug. 1863, Headquarters, 1st Military District, Department of South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida, a signed document sent to Charleston, S.C., arranging for delivery of rations to troops on Morris Island, S.C., and to those on outpost duty.
