2011-14.1. Area Plans, maps and reports, 1949-1968. These special studies document research conducted to support forest resource management planning. The area plan map for each township and range shows the planning program, the land to be left open, the land designated to be managed to favor certain wildlife species such as deer or prairie chickens, and signatures of approval from Michigan Department of Natural Resources staff. 2011-14.2. Detroit News Plantation Program, 1929-1956. The Michigan Conservation Department worked with the Detroit News in a project to plant tree seedlings in the tax reverted lands that became state forests. The company selected Jack, Norway and White pine seedlings to be planted in forty acre plots as memorials. Groups or individuals were given the opportunity to plant seedlings at a rate of $2.50 an acre. The State made up the remainder of the $5.50 to $7.50 per acre. Signs were posted on the land documenting who was being memorialized, and what group was sponsoring the tree memorial. Ultimately, the project contributed to the planting of 15 million trees with contributions from more than 200,000 people. These records include lists of plantations by donor or memorial, a booklet containing the "Detroit News" articles promoting the program and a tree survival rate survey. 2011-14.3. Continuous Forest Inventory, 1955-1981. The Continuous Forest Inventory documents the measurement and re-measurement of specific trees and areas. The objective was to measure the extent of changes that occur over time in forest grown for commercial products. These files include evaluation sheets and inventories. The record details tree types, girth of trees, undergrowth, and timber potential. 2011-14.4. Gifts of Land, 1923-1969.
