The Shourds family was originally from Holland, where the name was spelled Sioerts. As early members of the Society of Friends (Quakers) Cornelius and Sophia (Weimer) Shourds joined the Quaker migration to the New World in 1684 and received their first land grant from William Penn...The family moved to the vicinity of present-day Bordentown, Burlington County, New Jersey...[during the American Revolution] numerous family joined the Colonial forces and were disowned by the strongly pacifist Society of Friends. -- Foreword.
