Sheldon and Fife family papers, 1818-1936.

Collection contains genealogical materials, correspondence, diaries, India mission materials, sermons, Nanyang University (Shanghai, China) documents, and maps belonging to the Sheldon and Fife families, which were joined by the marriage of Sidney R. Sheldon and Eunice M. Fife in 1916. Of particular interest is a folder of materials concerning Sadhu Sundar Singh, the Indian Christian and mystic, and a collection of letters written by David W. Hutchison, a Union soldier during the U.S. Civil War who served under General Grant.

The Transylvania Presbytery was organized by appointment of the synods of New York and Philadelphia. The Synod of New York made part of the Presbytery of Abingdon into the Transylvania Presbytery, which encompassed the district of Kentucky and the settlements on the Cumberland River. The Reverend David Rice, Adam Rankin, Andrew McClure, and James Crawford met at the Danville, Kentucky courthouse to organize the presbytery. The synods of New York and Philadelphia appointed David Rice as moderator...
