Clement A. Smith, M.D. papers, 1927-1988.

The collection is divided into three series. The first series consists of Smith's personal papers that include his writings, correspondence with various individuals, and other materials collected while a physician at Children's Hospital. The second and third series are comprised of historical research materials collected by Smith while writing The Children's Hospital of Boston: "Built Better Than They Knew" (Boston: Little Brown and Co., 1983). The materials include various subject files as well as files on a number of prominent individuals associated with the hospital.

Clement Andrew Smith (1901-1998) was a pediatrician at Boston Lying-In Hospital, later known as Boston Hospital for Women and then Brigham and Women's Hospital, in Boston, Mass. Smith's research focused on newborn infants including fetal and neonatal physiology, perinatalogy, including maternal malnutrition; and the effect of humidity on water balance and respiration. Smith's research contributed to the founding of the specialty of neonatalogy in the 1960s. From the description of Pa...
