Joseph G. Woodward correspondence and research on Elizabeth Canning, 1887-1894.

Incoming letters to Joseph Woodward from members of the Treat family about the Treat family genealogy, research notes, research notebook, and a typed essay on the continuing mystery surrounding Elizabeth Canning who disappeared from her London home for a month in 1753. She reported she was kidnapped and held against her will. The trial surrounding her case was lengthy and eventually led to her being transported to the American colonies as punishment for perjury. She settled in Wethersfield, Connecticut, where she married John Treat and had several children. Woodward researched the story and wrote an essay that he delivered to the Connecticut Historical Society in January, 1894. Also in this collection are clippings of other cases or stories of murders or disappearances that were never solved.
