Amendments to the rules and regulations of the Massachusetts Professorship of Natural History, 1805 March 27.

This document enumerates the amendments made to a plan for the establishment of a Professorship of Natural History as presented to the Harvard Corporation in March 1805 by a group of prominent Massachusetts citizens. Some of the more significant amendments refer to the change in the name of the professorship from the Professorship of Botany and Entomology to the Professorship of Natural History and the inclusion of a religious qualification requiring the incumbent to be of the Christian Protestant religion and of good moral character. The amendments confer upon the Harvard Corporation the authority to suspend the professor from his office for neglect, inability to perform his duties, or for immoral behavior; the right to deny unruly students admittance to the professor's lectures; and permission to regulate the entrance of undergraduates to the botanic garden. Although the provenance of this document is unclear, it appears to have been annotated by Eliphalet Pearson during his service on the Harvard committee tasked with negotiating the rules and regulations of the Professorship.
