Kenneth Burke letters to Charles L. Elkins, and manuscripts, 1971-1985.

The collection consists primarily of letters and manuscripts Kenneth Burke sent to Charles Elkins, a young teacher and scholar who was interested in Burke's works and his correspondence with Hugh Duncan. Over a fourteen-year period, twenty letters and two postcards show Burke as a mentor and colleague, writing recommendations and commenting on Elkins' drafts as well as writing about his own experiences--about his essays, speaking engagements, other critics, life at Andover, his 1978 visit to Florida International University, and his 9th honorary degree awarded by Emory University in 1982. These letters include many of the themes of Burke's later period during the 1970s and early 1980s, among them behaviorism, logology, technology, and "Bodies that Learn Language." The collection also contains several manuscripts by Burke. These include: "The Seven Offices;" "The Anaesthetic Revelation of Herone Liddell;" "Three Talks on 'Logology'" (overview); and "The First Three Chapters of Genesis," with additional notes--"The returns are not yet all in. St. Aug is not yet in my hands," and "Physically, there is man as 'economic animal' in the strictly biological sense." Other essayistic notes include: "Dramatism," and "My stress upon the 'entelechial' principle has important implications." Additional items include a poem, "Out of Backwards Sidewise Towards Fromwards," an inscribed reprint of the playlet, "As the Curtain Rises," and seven black-and-white photographs of Kenneth Burke at Florida International University in 1978.
