The Schooner Acorn sunk in fifteen minutes following a collision with the Schooner Emily in Lake Erie eight miles off Cleveland Harbor on August 31, 1842. The Acorn was bound for Detroit, Michigan, from Buffalo, New York, and the Emily was bound for Buffalo. Survivors from the Acorn were taken aboard the Emily and taken to Cleveland but the ship and its contents were all lost.
