Florence James collection of Alexander M. Poniatoff and Ampex Corporation papers, 1964-1978.

Included in box 1 is a biography of Poniatoff (probably an autobiography), circa 1978, written when Mr. Poniatoff was 86 years old. There are also original photographs, excerpts from the Ampex Monitor, and some correspondence. Box 2 contains the tape recorder.

Ampex is an American electronics company founded in 1944 by Alexander M. Poniatoff. The name AMPEX is an acronym, created by its founder, which stands for Alexander M. Poniatoff Excellence. Florence James was personal secretary and friend to Mr. Poniatoff for many years. She came to Ampex in 1946 as the company's first stenographer. At the time the company had only 25 employees.
