Wood's Hibernia halfpenny, 1723.

"...American colonies lacked sufficient coinage to meet their needs. Further, it is evident that the colonists had a preference for English copper coins. However, it must be noted that England during the early 1700s failed to mint a sufficient cupply of coppiers to satisfy the daily needs ... This unmet need had to be satisfied. And it is here that Wood's Hibernia coins came into service in small transactions..."[From the Colonial Newsletter, Aug. 2001].
