During the Civil War, the U.S. Army created the Department of the Gulf and the Army of the Gulf following the capture of New Orleans, Louisiana, by Admiral David G. Farragut in 1862. Major General Benjamin F. Butler took command of the Union occupation forces as well as the Department of the Gulf. The soldiers in the new department were then designated as the Army of the Gulf. John Meyer (1824-1902), a Civil War officer and Iowa state senator. He was born near Bellefonte, Clinton County, Pa., a farmer's son. In 1846, he became a student in Mifflinburg College, and in a year later entered Oberlin College, graduating in 1853. On Aug. 25 of the same year he was married to Cornelia Beebee (d. 1895), also an Oberlin graduate. The Meyers came to Iowa in 1856 and settled in Newton.
