In 1966, the United State Congress passed the National Historic Preservation Act. This act required that each state establish a State Historic Preservation Office to identify, evaluate, register, interpret and protect the state's historic properties. The office provides technical assistance to local communities and administers an incentive program that includes state and federal tax credits.
