Collection contains correspondence and documents related to the Civil War military service of Charles W. Quiggins. Includes Quiggins military appointments and discharges; letters of promotion; clothing, equipment and ordnance invoices; an 1864 letter from Adjutant General D.W. Lindsay about guerrillas in Bagdad, KY; a list of places Quiggins traveled to beginning in 1862; and Quiggins appoinment as postmaster of Elizabethtown, KY. General orders include changes to KY Guard recruiting policies; building bridges in Kentucky; requests for surgeons; and orders and instructions for KY Guard to send detachments to polling places during the 1864 election. Also, two letters, 1799-1800, from Adjutant General Percival Butler.

Historical note: In 1860 the Kentucky Militia was replaced by the Kentucky State Guard. During the Civil War the State Guard suffered from the same divided loyalties which were indicative of Kentucky as a whole. It was reestablished in 1878, with the primary focus on controlling civil disturbances including feuds, riots, strikes, and lynchings. In 1912 the State Guard became the Kentucky National Guard. Charles W. Quiggins served with Co. G Kentucky 9th Cavalry Regiment from 1862-1863.
