The Normandie Fire, 1941-1942.

This small scrapbook chronicles the seizing of the ocean liner, Normandie, owned by Companie Generale Transatlantique of France at the beginning of World War II. Seized by the United States Navy, the ship was renamed the U.S.S. Lafayette. President Roosevelt ordered that the ship be retrofitted into a troopship, during which the ship caught fire at the New York Passenger Terminal in New York. The United States Navy chose to salvage the ship. The scrapbook includes articles related to the seizure and fire, with newspaper images of the fire and the damaged ship after the fire was extinguished.

Francis Beverley Biddle (1886-1968) was a graduate of Groton and Harvard. After Harvard Law School he served for one year as secretary to Supreme Court Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes.
