Papers, 1892-1983 1979-1983 Addition II.

This addition to the Chester Fritz Papers consists of materials related to the research and writing of Ever Westward to the Far East: The Story of Chester Fritz, by Dan Rylance and Chester Fritz. The material in this addition provides a good insight into the planning and writing of a biography of a living individual. The problems of obtaining the cooperation of the subject, information gathering, tactful use of the information, and production difficulties are clearly brought out in the correspondence. Also contained in the addition are some rare books about polo and the very unique "Shanghai Paper Hunt Club." Fritz was an avid polo player and cross-country horse racer while in China. The material has been divided into six series as follows: Series I: Biography correspondence This series consists of correspondence between Dan Rylance, Chester Fritz, and many of Fritz's associates relating to the initial book proposal, set up of interviews, questions and answers, and the follow-up work on the biography. The correspondence is listed in chronological order and by incoming and outgoing. Fritz's family history is also included in this series. Series II: Biography production materials This series contains the manuscript, production notes relating to ideas, bits of information and rough drafts. Series III: Audio and transcribed interviews This series contains audio tape interviews of Chester Fritz and his friends and business associates, as recorded by Dan Rylance. Written transcripts of some of these interviews are included in this series. Series IV: Newspaper clippings This series contains newspaper clippings about Chester Fritz, his donations to the University of North Dakota and the University of Washington, and his obituaries. Series V: Miscellaneous memorabilia This series contains memorabilia from Fritz's thirty-four years in the Far East, his association with the Universities of North Dakota and Washington, and his years as a resident in Switzerland and Monaco. Series VI: Photographs This series consists of photographs that chronicle the life of Chester Fritz from his youth in North Dakota, through his years in China and South America, and finally to his retirement in Europe. The photographs have been separated and placed in the Orin G. Libby Photograph Collection.
