George Clinton Gardner letters, 1849-1854.

This collection includes business and personal correspondence of George Clinton Gardner, written while on the United States Boundary Survey, 1849-1853. Gardner corresponded with his family throughout his work as assistant surveyor to Colonel W.H. Emory, "running and marking the boundary between the U.S. and Mexico." Some letters to Emory are also included in the collection. The letters are tipped into a bound leather volume, accompanied by two volumes of transcripts in a slip case.

George Clinton Gardner was born in Washington, D. C., on August 18, 1834, the son of Charles Kitchell Gardner and Anna Eliza McLean. After spending a year at Columbian College (now George Washington University), he pursued an engineering career, and in 1848 joined William H. Emory on a surveying expedition along the United States-Mexico border.
