Hentig, papers of Laura Leeper Plummer Hentig and various invitations and calling cards; journal kept by Jennie Harrison when she traveled to the Philippine Islands to be with her brother, Dr. Mathew Leeper. In this extensive journal Mrs. Harrison recounts her experiences, the living conditions and the native customs in both Hawaii and the Philippine Islands, 1882; letter from Walter Reed, 1882 telling Jennie Harrison that he and his wife will miss her company when she goes to the Philippine Islands.

Carr was born in Hamburg, New York. He graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York, in 1850, 19th in a class of 44 cadets. He was appointed a brevet second lieutenant in the Regiment of Mounted Riflemen, and served in the Indian Wars until 1861, seeing his first bit of combat on October 3, 1854 against Apaches near the Sierra Diablo Mountains. Born in Gloucester County, Va., Walter Reed received an M.D. from the University of Virginia in 1869 and another M.D. from Bellevue Hospital Medical College in 1871. He joined the Army Medical Corps in 1876. Reed served in many areas throughout the country, including Fort Lowell, Az., and Baltimore, before becoming professor of bacteriology at the Army Medical School in 1893. During the Spanish-American War he sought a cure for typhoid fever in Cuba. After the war, he remained in Cuba with the Y...
