Hardin and Northrop Family papers, 1849-1953.

Collection contains a series of letters transribed from primary sources located at the Virginia Military Institute archives concerning Mark Bernard Hardin. Letters of correspondence with Mark Hardin range from 1849 to 1899, while letters concerning him date from 1935 to 1953. Included in the collection is an 1849 North Carolina State Guard certificate awarded to W. H. Northrop and a 1919 scrapbook belonging to Fannie Northrop.

Mark Bernard Hardin was born on August 14, 1838 in Alexandria, Va. He was the son of Lauresten B. and Anna Hardin. An 1858 graduate of the Virginia Military Institute, Hardin accepted a teaching position with the Institute and taught there until hostilities broke out between the North and South. He joined the Thirty-third Virginia Regiment as major and along with Stonewall Jackson's Brigade fought in the First Battle of Manassas (First Battle of Bull Run).
