The Feris Papers document the daily lives of a landowning Texas family in the nineteenth century and their experience with the Mexican and Civil Wars, Reconstruction, and World War I, dating 1835-1944, bulk 1850-1900, with some undated material. Primarily correspondence, approximately two-thirds personal correspondence between various members of the Feris family, to one-third legal correspondence pertaining to Feris family land leasing and sales legal and business documents regarding purchases and leases on the Feris family land as well as tax receipts and voter registration forms; day books, household and business account books, and journals belonging to George, Lavinia and Irene Feris; paper ephemera such as invitations to weddings and balls, grocery and shipping receipts, and children?s copying exercises; newspapers and news clippings from Texas and Missouri on horses and horse breeding; and pamphlets and other printed material on horses and horse breeding. The bulk of the personal correspondence was written by or to Irene Feris Hocker, but there is also a significant amount of material to, or from, George, Achille, Yandell and Lavinia Feris describing military and civil life in Texas during the Civil War. Other items of note include a letter of commission from Texas Governor Francis Lubbock empowering George Feris to open a hospital for wounded Confederate soldiers; material reflecting the tense state of racial relations in the aftermath of the Civil War, including a tax receipt with ?nigger? scrawled next to the names of the sheriff and county treasurer; a series of letters documenting an 1880s surveying expedition to Lampasas which give a very detailed description of the town; a handwritten genealogy of the Feris family; receipts from George Feris? medical practice and store bills, as well as multiple household account books and receipts kept by Lavinia and Irene Feris, which detail the finances of a professional family in the nineteenth century; and a collection of land deeds and probate judgments from the Texas Republic.
