Businessman George Louis Hammeken (?-1881) moved to Mexico around 1831, settling in Texas as a representative for banking agents Manning and Marshall four years later. As president of the Brazos and Galveston Railroad, he purchased land in Austinia, the planned site for the company’s main office. From 1839 through 1841, Hammeken served as secretary to Barnard E.
