Elizabeth Appleton (c. 1790-1849), married name Lachlan, educationist and author. She became popular in the field of women's education after the 1815 publication of her Private Education, or, A Practical Plan for the Studies of Young Ladies. She lost much of her credibility following an evangelical conversion around 1830, afterwhich she gained a reputation as a fanatic. Henry Colburn was a British bookseller and publisher, known for his assertive marketing practices; he issued works by William Godwin, Mary Shelley, and Benjamin Disraeli, among others.
