James L. Gillis, Sr. Papers, 1923-1980.

Correspondence, clippings, printed materials pertaining to Georgia politics and highways, reports (especially as related to the State Highway Board), photographs, maps, speeches, ephemera, and oversize framed resolutions and certificates. The materials document James L. Gillis, Sr.'s entire career, especially the late 1930s and early 1950s. Of particular interest is Gillis' personal correspondence, which documents activities with the state and national Democratic Party, his work with the State Highway Board, and his role as manager of Ernest Vandiver's gubernatorial campaign. Unique to the papers is ephemera from Franklin D. Roosevelt's 1940 campaign and a small amount of correspondence with Eugene Talmadge. Very little of Gillis' state legislative career (1915-1917, 1923-1924) is documented: the principal material from that period is clippings.
