Airplanes, 1890-1914: manuscript album, 1914.

This volume contains 1,043 illustrations of early airplanes (including 100 original photographs and 224 reproductions of technical design). This collection was brought together before the outbreak of World War 1 (there is a note in pencil in the beginning of the volume "Development of aeroplane construction prior to WW I." - the note is in German). The illustrations, most of which are cuttings from magazines, periodicals and other ephemeral or hard-to-get publications, include captions in German. A detailed list of the contents is in the inside front cover. The first image in the book is of Prince Henry of Russia in an airplane with the quote "Ein Flugapparat ist weder ein offenes Grab, noch ein Kinderspielzeug" ("A flying machine is neither an open grave nor a toy for children"). The next few images are of Orville and Wilbur Wright and their airplane.

1 volume, 35 cm., 323 pages.
