Letter, 19 July 1887 (James Island, S.C.), to Charles Crosland, declining his request to write an article for publication supporting Gov. Benjamin Tillman's vews due to Rivers' differences in opinion with the governor's policies and political views, "I do not believe that the condition of the farmers of the state will be... bettered by legislation... any plan... which has for its object the dissemination of agricultural information will receive my... support"; experssing approval of plans for an agricultural college, but stating his opposition to a "farmers' political party" or the discussion of politics at meetings of agricultural societies.
