James Gamble family papers, 1853-1982.

James Gamble (1826-1905) directed the construction of the Overland Telegraph between San Francisco and Salt Lake City in 1861 and worked in the telegraph industry for 34 years. This collection contains his diary describing his overland trip on horseback with a wagon train between St. Louis and California in 1853; his professional autobiography; personal reminiscences by daughter, Mary Gamble; correspondence by great-grandson, Jack Gamble, concerning collecting Gamble memorabilia; cased daguerrotypes; portraits including one of Gamble with telegraph equipment; and photographs.
