Unrealized children's book project [graphic] : original gouaches and related materials / Milton Avery. 1945-2005.

Drawings (1945-1946) are for an unrealized project to illustrate a story by H.R. Hays. The story was subsequently published with different illustrations as: Charley sang a song / by H.R. Hays and Daniel Hays ; pictures by Uri Shulevitz. New York : Harper & Row, c1964. The drawings were subsequently published as illustrations to a story composed for them at the request of March Avery, the artist's daughter: Paul / by Karla Kuskin ; paintings by Milton Avery. [New York] : HarperCollins, c1994. Each drawing is signed in pencil by Avery and dated 1946, except for "Sketch for Flying pig," undated (1945), and first version of "Flying pig," dated 1945. Each is inscribed in pencil on verso with title, artist's name, dimensions, medium and date. Medium is given as W.C., except for "Sketch for Flying pig," which is chiefly in pencil and is so identified. Drawings are matted to 55 x 71 cm., except for "Sketch for Flying pig" and "Front cover and final scene," which are matted to 41 x 51 cm. and 51 x 41 cm. Collection includes copies of Charley sang a song and Paul, which are cataloged separately, and a mock-up for an unrealized reprint, planned for 2005, of Paul under title: The flying pig, and other winged creatures / by Karla Kuskin ; paintings by Milton Avery. There is also an exhibition brochure (2005) and a folder of miscellaneous memoranda, correspondence and notes relating to the acquisition and exhibition of the drawings (2001-2005).
